About LKE
LKE started life back in 1964 as a 1200cc 105e Anglia Super and by the time Team Anglia acquired (him / her / it) back in late March 2007 there was already some 96,000 miles on the clock.
Having established that LKE was basically sound we set about removing all the chrome trim, lights and glass etc in preparation of getting the car over to Jags Bodyshop to be resprayed and while the car was away being painted we used the time to strip and rebuild the 1600 GT X/Flow engine that we had previously taken out of another of Roy's fleet of Anglias.
The engine, together with the disc brake front suspension, uprated gearbox, and 3.9 :1 rear axle, which were also salvaged from the doner car, were all cleaned and checked for wear or damage and over the next few months we slowly gathered together all the necessary parts that were needed to put LKE back together again.
Starting from the front,... Behind the grill lurks a Kenlowe twin fan set-up which, when required, blows a hurricane of air through a Mocal 13 row oil cooler and a custom built Pro-Alloy radiator. Under the bonnet sits the 1600cc GT engine fitted with a new Weber 32/36 carb, courtesy of Webcon, which is topped off with a Pipercross air filter.
Sparks are provided by a modified distributor fitted with a Lumenition optical ingnition system coupled to a high energy coil and Silicon Blue plug leads which carry the sparks to a set of NGK plugs.
LKE's lubrication requirements have kindly been taken care of by Millers Oils and a Burton Power high pressure oil pump provides a constant 60psi pressure when the engine is at operating temperature. Electrical power is provided by a 17ACR alternator feeding an Odyssey Extreme Racing battery which lays on its side in the original battery tray.
The braking system has been uprated by the addition of a Girling Powerstop remote servo and a pair of P16 calipers provided by FPS Automotive Parts. Steel braided flexible brake pipes from Cam Autos fend of the flying stones and a home made alloy sump guard protects the underside of the engine and steering linkage.
As a result of the exhaust pipe problems we had on the Moscow Rally (see our 2007 blog) the exhaust gasses are now carried away inside a custom made FlowTech exhaust system mated to a modified 4 -2 -1 exhaust manifold and a CTM Performace cylinder head and matched inlet manifold tops off the engine nicely.
A type 9 five speed gearbox, kindly donated by Harris Performance Engines, provides the necessary range of gears to allow LKE to keep pace with modern traffic without us having to stress the APR big end bolts too much.
The new grearbox is tucked away inside a RetroFord modified transmission tunnel, a Titan Motorsport concentric clutch release bearing carrier has replaced the old cluch lever system and a modified RS2000 alloy bell housing encapsulates an AP Racing conversion clutch assembly.
The 3.9:1 CWP has been fitted with a Tran-X limited slip differential which carries the power to a set of 5 1/2 x 13 of Minilite alloy rims shod with new Goodyear GT3 tyres which were fitted and balanced curtesy of Nationwide Autocenters. Back axle lateral location is maintained by the fitment of an "A" Frame and a pair of custom built Spax Gas telescopic shock absorbers smooth out the bumps.
Prior to the Moscow rally, East Kent Trim Supplies kindly provided new door and window seals to keep out the drafts & rain and the bodywork & chrome trim are now kept in tip top condition by the use of Autoglym products. As an added precaution the windscreen has been treated with a coat of Rain-X just in case the wiper motor stops working again.
Inside LKE we are able to relax in the comfort of a pair of tailor made Cobra Le-Mans seats while listening to classical music wafting from the stereo / iPod player installed by Car Toonz.
Route navigation is taken care of by a Navigon 8110 sat nav system and route instruction reading at night has been made easy by the fitment of a Grayston Engineering Avanti map light. Both driver and navigator are kept snug in their seats by 3 point fixing Msar-Safety rally harnesses .
Finally,
Prior to setting off on our next BEN adventure LKE will undergo a final tune-up on the "state of the art" rolling road at Road "N" Track just to make absolutely sure everything is working as it should then........... Italy here we come....
Needless to say, without the financial contribution made by Ford Motor Company Limited and the much needed support and assistance provided by Burton Power, Team-Anglia would not exist and, through this page, we would like to thank them both for all that they have done to make our fund raising endeavours for BEN possible.
In writing this page we have almost certainly forgotten to mention one or possibly more of the many people or companies who have generously donated parts for LKE and for any such oversight we humbly and sincerely apologise.
