About TEAM ANGLIA

Team Anglia consists of Roy Springate, John Bowers and a somewhat "modified" 1964 Ford Anglia 1200 Super.

Roy and John are in their 60's and have worked in the aftermarket sector of the motor industry for most of their lives. Both are happily married and, it is only fair to say, without the continued love and support of their families they would be unable to undertake these challenging events.

Roy Springate

Roy’s background was forged in the hometown of Ford, Dagenham.

Both his father and grandfather worked at Fords and also, for a while, so did his gran! Roy still has the original 105e Anglia that the family purchased direct from the factory in 1960 but sadly it now has a serious case of tin-worm that will be difficult, but not impossible, to eradicate.

In 1976 Roy took up a ‘Snap-On Tools’ franchise and ran that for 24 years with a further 6 years as an independent with ‘Cornwell Tools’.In 1978 he was in partnership with a friend running a Speedworth hot-rod for a couple of seasons. This was as a direct result of having both Barry Lee and the engineers at Burton Power as customers and it was back then that Roy and John first met each other.

In 2003 Roy’s 12 year old son Ian wanted to try Autograss racing, which re-fuelled Roy’s love of motorsport. It also meant that, as both Juniors and Class 1 Seniors used the same specification Mini, both Ian and Roy could compete with the same car. Although not currently racing it proved that age alone is not a barrier to being competitive and having an enormous amount of fun!

Roy now works at Burton Power and is enjoying new challenges with a much respected motorsport company.

Roy’s hobbies include; Target and clay pigeon shooting, DIY, Classical music, Re-cycling, Local community interests and Collecting.

John Bowers.

John also had direct family ties with Ford Dagenham as, during the 1950's & 60's, his father worked the night shift in the engine plant and his uncle was employed as a maintenance electrician on the production lines.

Throughout the 1970's & 80's most of John's spare time was taken up with building and  preparing competition cars and his weekends were spent competing in club rallies in various cars including an Austin Healey Sprite, MGB GT, T/cam Escort Mk1, and an indecently quick 1000cc Hillman Imp.

Back in those days John was also the Chief Marshal of Roding Car Club and when not officiating, marshalling or competing on Night & Special Stage Rallies he could often be found at local Autocross events competing in the "specials" class in a much modified minivan affectionatly and appropriatly named UGLY.

John has had a long career in the motor industry, working for Burton Power for 13 years as their Engineering Manager and then being employed by the Retail Motor Industry Federation, originally as their Automotive Engineering Manager and later, as Director of both the Federation of Engine Re-Manufacturers and the National Association of Radiator Specialists

John is now a self employed Independant Consultant Engineer and Expert Witness and his company provides specialist vehicle inspection and reporting services to Vehicle Manufacturers, Franchise Motor Dealers, Independant Garages, Solicitors, Insurance Providers and the Motor Industry in general.

John's hobbies include; Reading, Listening to Classical & 60's music, Pub Quizzes, Family History Research, Photography, Scuba Diving and (just occasionally) messing about with Ford 105e Anglias.

In July 2007 Team Anglia took part in the inaugural BEN - Trafalgar Square to Red Square Charity Rally  which saw the teams drive across seven countries in 10 days covering some 3000kl in the process.
